The Division of Water Pollution Control develops and implements programs to prevent or clean up the pollution of surface and ground water in Massachusetts. The division's biology section and its immediate predecessor in this function have created field survey files to characterize and qualitatively document the Commonwealth's rivers, streams, and aquatic habitats; and qualitatively document the Commonwealth's rivers, streams, and aquatic habitats; and to segment and classify water bodies into major habitats for the purposes of water use designation.
